An oil platform, offshore platform, or offshore drilling rig is a large structure with facilities for well drilling to explore,
The BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that exploded April 20 was 400 feet by 250 feet—roughly the size of two football fields—with a crew of 130. Some rigs are even larger. In fact, many of today’s oil platforms are essentially floating cities that employ and house hundreds of people. There are around 1,470 offshore oil rigs around the world, which means this role could take you anywhere from the UK to Australia or even the Gulf of Mexico or the Middle East. At any one time you will find nearly 200 people living and working on a rig. The deepest floating oil rig is the Perdido oil rig operated by Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico about 200 miles south of Galveston, Texas. The Perdido fold belt is one of the larger discoveries of crude oil and natural gas and the field lies under nearly 8,000 feet (2450m) of ocean. These include bottom founded drilling rigs (jackup barges and swamp barges), combined drilling and production facilities either bottom founded or floating platforms, and deepwater mobile offshore drilling units (MODU) including semi-submersibles and drillships. These are capable of operating in water depths up to 3,000 metres (9,800 ft). Oil and gas rigs are some of the biggest moveable structures in the world. Modern rigs cost millions of dollars and can weigh up to 30,000 tons. So what does it take to move these engineering marvels? We ask David Wells, CEO of consultancy, and rig-moving specialists, Aqualis Offshore. World's Biggest Oil Rigs 2018 As oceans swell around them, some of the world's tallest manmade structures live in water, not on land. There's not a whole lot of variety when it comes to this Then they use a mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) to dig the initial well. Some units are converted into production rigs, meaning they switch from drilling for oil to capturing oil once it's found. Most of the time, the oil company will replace the MODU with a more permanent oil production rig to capture oil.
